UNVISITED DREAMS
Writer-Director, Producer: Fatima Ali
“If we could free ourselves from those perfect expectations”
Unvisited Dreams is based on a conflict faced by the youth when they pursue their dreams but are restricted by parents. It is a coming-of-age story of a young girl carrying the weight of unspoken expectations; a metaphorical portrayal of a changing relationship, the girl and the father playing a game of chess.
FILM DESIGN
Designed the visual campaign for ‘Unvisited Dreams’ with a subtle approach hinting at the film’s overall feel. Logotype and the poster imagery is sleek and minimal. The first poster incorporates a still from the film revealing the car from the inside featuring the rear view mirror signifying the past, as the film is split between real time and flashbacks while the father is seen self-reflecting in the film. The blurred open road is a symbolic representation of the journey ahead. For the second poster, I photographed the blurred moving car lights forming an intricate colorful pattern to capture a dream-like mysterious feel.
THE MAKING OF UNVISITED DREAMS
Unvisited Dreams is an exploration of the human experience and the universal conflict faced by the youth when they pursue their dreams but are restricted by parents. The film aims to create awareness amongst the parents to let the young follow their dreams. Film incorporates visual metaphors, the intercutting of girl dropping the bag symbolises the weight of unspoken expectations. The girl and her father playing chess on different days represent the conflict and their changing relationship.
I initiated the project with psychological research on the development of human personality and conducted field research by interviewing different age groups in order to gain an insight about their journey of pursuing dreams and career choices.
